Seoul Semiconductor to Sponsor the 2018
Lighting For Health & Wellbeing
Conference

In addition to showcasing its SunLike Series natural spectrum LEDs as a next-generation light source optimized for human-centric lighting applications, Seoul Semiconductor has invited Dr. Octavio Pérez, PhD researcher at Mount Sinai Hospital to present on “Melanopic Stimulus Insights for Health & Wellbeing Lighting & Design” at the one-day conference

NEWPORT BEACH, CA (July 18, 2018) – Seoul Semiconductor, a global innovator of LED products and technology, is the official conference sponsor of the Lighting for Health & Wellbeing Conference in Newport Beach, CA on July 18, 2017. The company will showcase its SunLike Series natural spectrum LEDs – the first light source to closely matches the spectrum of natural sunlight. In addition, invited presenter Dr. Octavio Pérez, PhD researcher at the Mount Sinai Hospital and international lighting consultant will take the stage at 11am to discuss melanopic stimulus as it relates to human centric lighting issues.

Melanopic Stimulus Insights for Lighting Designers
Dr. Pérez will deliver one of the main conference presentations at the Lighting for Health & Wellbeing Conference, on the topic of “melanopic stimulus” as it relates to lighting design. According to Dr. Pérez, “In the emerging field of science known as “integrative lighting,” or, human-centric lighting, the design of a lighting system to produce beneficial physiological and/or psychological effects on humans will include both visual and non-visual effects. While the visual effects of lighting systems are well known to the lighting community, the real world experience with non-visual effects is still new to lighting manufacturers, designers and architects, as well as the end-users of lighted spaces.”

“As an example, the WELL Building Standard Feature 54 is designed to support circadian health by setting a minimum threshold for daytime light intensity,” explains Dr. Pérez. “This involves properly translating and implementing melanopic stimulus metrics, which are based on the human eyes’ non-image forming photoreceptors – the intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells, or ipRGCs – instead of the traditional lux measurement weighted toward retinal cones.”

“This approach will move the lighting discussion away from fixtures and drivers and toward a more holistic integration of lighting into architectural spaces,” continued Dr. Pérez, “and will raise ethical questions about how this new form of integrative lighting will be applied.”

Dr. Pérez will deliver his presentation, “Melanopic Stimulus Insights for Health & Wellbeing Lighting & Design” at 11:00am during the conference.

Delivering the benefits of natural spectrum LEDs for health & wellness
Seoul Semiconductor will also showcase their SunLike Series natural spectrum LED technology that produces light closely matching the spectrum of natural sunlight. By providing a light source more like natural sunlight, these new LEDs minimize the shortcomings of artificial light sources while maximizing the benefits of natural light to help lighting designers develop lighting that is truly human-centric.

SunLike Series LEDs have also achieved the highest level of eye safety certification from the International Commission on Illumination as an RG-1 level light source with no photo-biological risks.

SunLike Series natural spectrum LEDs were co-developed through the combination of Seoul Semiconductor’s optical semiconductor technology and Toshiba Materials’ TRI-R technology to produce light that closely matches the spectrum of natural sunlight. TRI-R is a registered trademark of Toshiba Material Co., Ltd.

A new era of human centric lighting technology
According to Seoul Semiconductor, the introduction of the SunLike Series natural spectrum LEDs will contribute to better and healthier life for humans by creating a more nature-based lighting environment that advances a new era of human-centric lighting technology.
