Cree Lighting’s KBL Series with Synapse® SimplySNAP Delivers Quality, Reliable Lighting Solution to ULINE

Jan. 1, 2021
Together, the companies created a smart, efficient lighting system designed to produce maximum light output allowed by state codes.

DURHAM, N.C. – Cree Lighting announced the completion of a massive lighting project with ULINE, a rapidly growing shipping supply company. The project included the installation of 3,014 KBL Series high-bay luminaires integrated with Synapse® SimplySNAP wireless lighting controls to enhance the employee experience, warehouse aesthetics, and comply with the Washington State Energy Code at ULINE’s 800,000 square foot facility in Lacey, Washington.

“We are committed to creating long-lasting, sustainable partnerships with both our customers and other industry manufacturers,” said Craig Atwater, senior vice president and general manager, Cree Lighting. “ULINE is a prime example of that type of customer relationship. We listened to their desire for a lighting system that matched the operational excellence and reliability baked into their culture, and that is why we brought in our industry partner, Synapse®, to help create a solution that would suit ULINE’s needs.”

ULINE chose to install the KBL Series high-bay throughout the facility for several reasons. The highly-efficient KBL luminaire produces more light while consuming less energy than traditional metal halide fixtures. The KBL Series also has an instant start so they turn on when needed without delay and have dimming capabilities straight out of the box. More levels of control – such as occupancy detection, daylight harvesting, scheduling and alerts – are available with a wireless control platform to customize the luminaire and tap into a higher performance level.

“The amount of light coming from the KBL Series luminaire sets it apart from other high-bay fixtures on the market. Even though it’s producing an abundance of light, people working underneath the luminaires still experience visual comfort in a properly illuminated space that doesn’t cause headaches and is glare-free,” said Ryan Loggins, project manager, Cree Lighting.

In addition to the normal features of a controls system, ULINE wanted to integrate the system in a way that would tie into the main building systems and detect motion so all the luminaires in an area would come on at the same time when needed. To accomplish this, Synapse®, Cree Lighting and ULINE decided to use SimplySNAP, a scalable platform that can scale up to 10,000 lights, manage multiple gateways from a single user interface and integrate with a building management system (BMS).

ULINE has experienced several tangible and intangible benefits since implementing the new luminaires and wireless control system, such as improved visibility, productivity, safety, quality control and employee morale. ULINE has also met the stringent Washington State Energy Code, saved 50% on their energy output, saved an additional 30% in energy savings due to the occupancy control and another 5% from daylight harvesting, which allows ULINE to operate the facility at 20% of the cost it used to. “The collaboration between the Cree Lighting and Synapse® Wireless teams has been outstanding. They worked together to fine tune the way in which the Synapse® controls are integrated into the lighting product,” said Mike McConnell, Director of Engineering, ULINE. “We’re here today with a partnership that positions us well for the future.”
